My Observations from Taiwan as a Visitor
Travel
spoiler
These are my side notes about Taiwan after spending just over three weeks in the country with my Taiwanese wife. Overall, I loved the entire experience and look forward to returning!
Super delicious food! Eating starts from early in the morning until late at night. Lose some weight before travelling to Taiwan.
The loveliest people! You see sweeter people more common in the South area (or maybe other than Taipei). Don’t take it wrong, Taipei people are also super friendly but just a little different.
Respect is of utmost importance among people. Be polite.
People are generally relaxed, patient and tolerant. They are helpful to tourists.
People give significance to sports activities. The government encourages the communities to do more sports, and they provide fixed exercise gear in public parks.
The traffic is no good. I would never ever drive a car or ride a motorcycle in Taiwan
It is recommended to show the parents-in-law you look after your Taiwanese wife/girlfriend, such as carrying her stuff, serving her plate while having food, helping her shop, etc.
There is a delicious variety of drinks, such as teas, juices, etc.
Undeveloped biking and walking tracks. It is often dangerous to walk or ride a bike as there are no dedicated trails (there are in some areas, but they are generally occupied by parked motorcycles). You need to pay attention to other vehicles, especially motorcycles while walking on the street at all times. Local people walking on the roads seem to rely on motorcyclists and drivers and do not pay enough attention.
Underdeveloped consumer/ return policy. Before buying anything, ask if you could return or exchange it.
Well-developed elder communities, which appear to be exceptionally social.
Toilets are everywhere, and they are clean! Some of the public restrooms have Japanese-style butt cleaners.
Some venues have toilets separated for only females and all other genders, showing their thoughtfulness toward LGBT people
A single toilet roll is provided at the sink area of some of the public toilets for sharing, and there is none in the individual bathrooms. Make sure you grab a sufficient amount before toileting.
YouBikes are super convenient. However, be careful while riding. I wouldn’t ride in the traffic.
Working conditions are harsh, but employees do not reflect their stress on you. If you go to a store, you can still see staff members’ smiling faces, although they worked over 10 hours.
The weather and plantation ultimately change from north to south.
Many things are communicated in an animated way - interesting. Even the city governors are trying to look cute in events (for example, new year events).
Packaging is magnificently exaggerated. One of the wedding gifts was a box of cookies. Each cookie was packed separately with strong plastic. They were put into a fancy box. Another package was wrapped around the cartoon box, and it was put in another plastic bag.
Self-escape gears from the high floors in case of fire are quite impressive.
Stinky tofu truly stinks. Keep away! Or, be brave and try it; you may love it.
Convenient stores like 7-Eleven and Family Mart are really convenient. They are literally at every corner and open 24 hours. You can find anything you need, cash-out money from the ATMs, post an item, copy/scan documents, even buy a box of instant noodles, cook with available hot water and eat in the shop.
GPs everywhere; I am told that people get sick so often here, and that is the reason. Edit: It suggested that the public health system is well-funded by the government and the people tend to see doctors even they get a little cold. So, I should correct that it is not because people get sick quite often.
People still wear masks outside even though it is not obligated any longer.
Negotiation works! I was strictly advised that I should not do negotiations in Taiwan. When I tried it at some of the shops, I noticed that it works pretty well, and local people are quite open to it.
Don’t get ripped off! When you enter a shop, ask if there is any discount on the item you want. Most of the time, the discounts are not reflected on the price label, and they may not tell you about the sale unless you ask.
