The Portuguese Pavilion was one of the fundamental references of the exposition and occupied a central location opposite the Olivais Dock across from the Oceanarium. It was here that visitors made their first "plunge", as it were, into the EXPO '98 theme - "The Oceans, a Heritage for the Future". In this context, the ocean was treated as the setting for human activity and as the means for establishing communication. The Pavilion was designed by Álvaro Siza Vieira of Portugal, and used as the stage where official ceremonies related with the 1998 Lisbon World Exposition took place. After EXPO, the building will be home for government offices.
